Tella Kitchen was born in 1902 on a small farm near Londonderry, Ohio. While still at a young age, her family moved to a small farm outside of Independence, Indiana. Following marriage, she returned with her husband to Ohio to live in the small village of Adelphi. She died in 1988.
“Tella Kitchen’s paintings bustle with the daily activity of small-town and country life. Her brilliantly colored pictures provide a detailed view of rural America in the early twentieth century.”
Robert Bishop, Director, Museum of American Folk Art, New York
